Sometimes a student just needs someone to sit down with them, figure out exactly where the confusion is, and work through it together. That’s tutoring — and it’s one of the most valuable educational investments a family can make.
At Georgia Mountain Academy, we offer one-on-one tutoring for students from elementary school through high school, in subjects from basic reading to ACT prep. Our tutoring is available to both homeschool families and students enrolled in public or private schools.
Keely Chalk has been working individually with students since 1995. She is Georgia State Certified and has seen every kind of learner — the student who’s always been “bad at math,” the bright kid who just needs to slow down, the advanced student who needs more challenge. Every student is different. Every tutoring plan is different.

Who We Tutor
Elementary School (Grades K–5)
Foundational skills are everything. A student who struggles with reading in 2nd grade will struggle with science in 6th grade and history in 10th grade. We catch these gaps early and fill them in before they become bigger problems.
- Phonics and foundational reading skills
- Reading fluency and comprehension
- Basic writing: sentences, paragraphs, and telling a complete story
- Math facts and number sense
- Introduction to fractions, decimals, and early algebra concepts
- Study skills and organization — habits that will serve students for life
Middle School (Grades 6–8)
Middle school is where the gap between “I kind of get it” and “I actually understand it” starts to matter. Writing expectations jump significantly and math starts requiring genuine understanding of abstract concepts.
- Reading comprehension and literary analysis
- Essay writing: structure, thesis, and developing an argument
- Math (through Pre-Algebra and beginning Algebra)
- Grammar and mechanics
- Study skills and time management
- Science and social studies content support
High School (Grades 9–12)
High school tutoring is some of the most impactful work we do — grades matter for college admissions, and gaps in foundational knowledge can make entire courses feel impossible.
Academic tutoring:
- English (essay writing, literary analysis, research papers, grammar)
- History and Social Studies
- Economics and Government
- Algebra 1
- Physical Science
- General test prep and study skills
College prep:
- SAT prep (Reading & Writing and Math sections)
- ACT prep (English, Math, Reading, and Science sections)
- College essay coaching: brainstorming, drafting, and editing the personal statement
- Application organization: deadlines, materials, and what colleges actually look for
We do not currently offer tutoring in advanced math (Algebra 2 and higher) or advanced science (Chemistry, Biology, Physics, AP Sciences). If your student needs support in those subjects, we are happy to help you find appropriate resources.
We Tutor Both Homeschool and Public/Private School Students
We work with families from across the North Georgia mountain region — Pickens County, Gilmer County, Cherokee County, and beyond — regardless of where their student attends school.
- Public school student falling behind? We can help.
- Private school student who needs extra support in a specific subject? We can help.
- Homeschooled student who needs a certified teacher to work through a concept? We can help.
- Student transferring between schools who has gaps from a curriculum change? We can help.
How Tutoring Works
Step 1 — Free Initial Consultation
We start with a conversation. We want to understand your student — not just what subject they are struggling in, but how they learn, what their day looks like, and what success would look like for your family. Free, about 30 minutes.
Step 2 — Assessment
A brief informal assessment to figure out exactly where the gaps are. This is not a test — it is a way to build a plan that actually works.
Step 3 — Personalized Tutoring Plan
We put together a plan: how often we will meet, what we will focus on, and what goals we are working toward. Plans are flexible and adjust as your student progresses.
Step 4 — Regular Sessions
One-on-one, in-person at our Talking Rock campus or online via video call. Sessions are typically 50–60 minutes.
Step 5 — Parent Communication
We communicate regularly — after sessions, when we hit a breakthrough, and when we think something needs to change. You are part of the team.
